A Young Tim Russert

As soon as news broke yesterday that Tim Russert had passed away, a friend who works in news in Los Angeles called me. Today I got a message from a pal in Dallas. They all know I don’t work at NBC and that I never worked with Russert, but since Tim worked in Washington and New York, my friends thought of me in New York. The crazy kind of logic that accompanies shock.
Later, walking along Columbus Avenue telling my mom over my cell phone, some guy walking by me overheard, stopped in front of me, turned around and screamed, “NO!”
I nodded yes. It was another indication of the kind of bond Tim Russert had with those who followed his work and a reflection of how well appreciated he was by people who knew him only as a presence on TV.
