Thanks to all who came out for New York Press Club Conference Saturday.
Keynote Speaker CNBC’s David Faber was kind enough to let me do a quick iPhone video interview for this blog. Read that post here.
Be sure to check out Faber’s new book, “And Then the Roof Caved In.”
NYPC Conference

New York University Kimmel Center
60 Washington Square South at LaGuardia Place
8:30AM to 2:00PM
9/11/09 Eight years today New York City journalists were preparing to cover the Mayoral democratic primary. It was a heated four-way contest. However, our agenda changed that day. What have we learned over the years? I’m compiling some links of this year’s coverage.
The NY400 Holland on the Hudson celebration continues through Sunday, September 13th. Full details at http://www.ny400.org. Be sure to check out the photos and essay from Tuesday’s kickoff celebration by Achilles Schiano. His pictures are amazing! A big thanks to him.
9/9/09 With another Labor Day behind us, my friend and former colleague, Kevin Van Meter, takes a look at how things have changed over the years since the first Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon on WNEW-TV 5 at the Americana Hotel in 1966. Read his post here.
8/08/09 Today’s news was supposed to be all about the first Hispanic justice sworn into Supreme Court. The swearing in of Sonia Sotomayor was also the first to be televised. Sotomayor is also only the third woman in the court’s 220-year history. But we know how the world works, and unfortunately, all I’ve been watching today since noon is the helicopter/plane crash in the Hudson. On twitter, people have mentioned how much the networks are using viewer generated pictures and video. Here is one example from CNN. What do you think?
I originally embedded the below video box from Hulu.com so readers could watch the Michael Jackson memorial from LA live.
Since then, I’ve noticed that Hulu keeps this box active with news events. We were able to watch recent Obama news conferences here. However, you can click on the below box, and do a search in the upper right screen for videos.
Sticking it to you!
A driver found a ticket on his car when his inspection sticker lost it’s sticky and fell (in clear view on the dash board.)

@sreenet , @stevescottwcbs and @lmccullough did a fabulous job leading the New York Press Club’s Social Networking for Journalists event back in April.
Soon I will introduce you to many more characters to guide you through the social networking world.
I just attended 140conf.com, a conference looking into the NOW of the online world. Journalists and technical experts from around the country gathered in New York City to explore twitter and the inside workings of inspired minds. I will be posting some ideas, plus linking more blogs to the column on the right.
The organizer of 140conf, Jeff Pulver, is currently looking for “creative, out-of-the-box thinkers” who would like to discuss Celebrity, The Media, Advertising and possibly politics in his upcoming events in London and Los Angeles. Again he will be looking at twitter as a platform and exploring “The State of Now.” More information here. @jeffpulver
(Oh, and follow me @hrkovar.)
CONGRATULATIONS to all of the 2009 New York Press Club Journalism Awards winners. The dinner was held Monday, June 15th. Pictures coming soon!
The Press Club’s previous event, “The State of Cyberspace in America” was successful with a packed house. Three days after the club’s discussion with Dale Meyerrose, former Chief Information Officer for the U.S. Intelligence Community, President Obama announces his cybersecurity strategy. Obama also revealed in the White House event that his presidential campaign’s computers were hacked by intruders.
Meyerrose said a cyber “9-11″ or cyber “Pearl Harbor” is possible, and that it looks as if it’s going to take such events to get our attention.
Read the write-up from the Press Club’s event by Mark F. Bonner here.
Be sure to check out the pictures and write up from the opening of Fleet Week 09 from Press Club member Archie Schiano .
Great job @sreenet @stevescottwcbs @lmccullough on …
Oh wait, sorry, this isn’t a Twitter update. I don’t have to confine myself to 140 characters and I can use real names!
It was a packed room and nice learning event at the New York Press Club’s Social Networking for Journalists event.

The New York Press Club hosted “An Evening With CBS News Correspondent
Bob Schieffer” on Tuesday, February 17th. Here the journalist poses with moderator David Diaz.
If you are on Facebook, (and you know you are,) you need to join the group Fans of New York Press Club! All you have to do is sign in, then do a search in the right hand corner for “Fans of New York Press Club” and it will come right up.
Journalists put in so much time covering varied topics in many interesting ways, and I’d like to make sure your stories and coverage are seen and read. Please send me a link to your blog, and I will keep post them down the right hand side of this blog.

Saturday, November 15th, the New York Press Club held it’s 16th Annual Conference on Journalism at New York University.
NYPC Hall of Fame Inductee and Foundation President, Gabe Pressman, opened the conference commenting on the coverage of the 2008 elections.
Be sure to read about his witty introduction and the panel that discussed the election in the blog posting to the left: “16th Annual NYPC Conference: Sound the Tin Horns”
On November 17, 1968, the Eyewitness News format hit the airwaves on WABC. 40 years later, the man behind that concept, Al Primo, has written the book, “EYEWITNESS Newsman.” A short video clip of the author is below. Click on the post, Eyewitnessing 40 Years, to the right to hear more from Al Primo.
You made it through Election Day. You can still use the widget below to check out the exit polling nationally, as well as in each state. For example, nationally, more women voted for Obama than men.

We celebrated the 60th anniversary of the founding of the New York Press Club Monday, September 22nd at the New York Historical Society.
See more pics in the blog postings to right, plus check back soon for some stories from the past.
Thanks to NBS Nightly News Anchor Brian Williams for speaking at the event prior to his interview with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
The Press Club made history by inducting it’s first members into the club’s Hall of Fame. Congratulations to Gabe Pressman of WNBC and Stan Brooks of WINS radio.
Fellow Press Club member Ellis Henican and I participated in a Stand Up Comedy fundraiser at Gotham Comedy Club. Here is the video of my five minute act!
A little about me. Currently I am Morning Anchor and Reporter at News 12 Connecticut. I live in NYC with my dog Willamena, where we’ve been roaming the streets and sitting in alternate side parking since 2002.
Along with my own musings about current events, I am interviewing fellow journalists and media professionals about how issues affect their lives and jobs. I’m also trying to set up some interviews with newsmakers to ask them questions about how they view, use, like or avoid the media.
I would like you to contribute as much as possible - at length, in brief, archly, wryly, whatever. The New York Press Club would like to get a conversation going.
Recently, I’ve been experimenting with social media, and how to use it to bring viewers to our content. (I’ll try to keep you up to date via my posts on this blog.) For example, when I post a blog here, I also provide a short headline and a link on my Twitter account. That automatically puts a link on my Facebook page and personal blog. So far, the feedback has been worthwhile, plus I’ve made a media contact or two in the process. Actually, a Twitter feed is where I found this college picture of Tim Russert.
Way back when the super star dogs were prancing around Manhattan during Westminster, I wrote about New Yorkers and their dogs. I also have some pictures of journalists with their pets to share. Please send me yours! I will update.
