The New York Press Club Awards for Journalism

The New York Press Club Journalism Awards are a venerable tradition in New York media, honoring excellence in journalism by writers and reporters who are recognized as being among the best in their fields.

Entries are considered in more than 20 categories of reporting from material submitted by newspapers, TV and radio operations, magazines and Web sites, operating in the New York metropolitan area.

Judging is by noted journalists, former journalists and academics who are selected for their expertise in the categories to be judged.

Among the categories unique to the Press Club Awards are the Gold Keyboard, honoring excellence in investigative journalism; The Nellie Bly Cub Reporter, honoring the best journalistic effort by a writer or reporter with three years or less experience and The Reverend Mychal Judge Heart of New York for reporting that is most complimentary of New York City.

2009 Competition Rules
Please note NEW rule for multi-part and series entries, Rule 8
1. The competition is open to individuals and/or legitimate news organizations based or operating in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
2. All entries must have been published or broadcast between 1/1/2008 and 12/31/2008.
3. An entry may not be submitted in more than one category.
NOTE: news organizations often submit entries on behalf of employees. It is permissible in such cases for employees to submit other work on their own behalf, even in the same categories as employer submitted material. Employees are advised to check company policy before entering the additional material.
4. An entry submitted in an incorrect category will be disqualified.
5. Entries sent by mail must be submitted in duplicate (two copies of each manuscript or disc) and must be accompanied by fully-completed entry forms and appropriate entry fees.
6. For digital entries submitted by upload to our Awards Web server, the entry form is part of the upload form for each entry. Entry fees may be paid electronically on our Web site – or – payment may be sent separately by mail to arrive no later than one week following upload.
7. Entries for which no entry fees have been received as detailed in Rule 6 will not be submitted to the judges.
8. Multi-part or series entries must be limited to “the heart” of the material:
Print 5 parts maximum and 5,000 total words, moreorless.
Broadcast 5-minutes total running-time for individual stories, 10-minutes for series. (Running-time limit does not apply to entries in the “Regularly Scheduled” TV category OR to long-form, non-hard-news pieces that otherwise fit an Awards category).
Rules FAQ
Q Do the judges have the option of moving the entry to a different category and have they moved entries in the past? I ask because the material I'm entering could fit into three categories -- continuing coverage, buisness and consumer award.
A NO. You must decide which is the most appropriate category. The judges will not move an entry to a different category. (The only "move" the judges can perform is to disqualify an entry if it has been entered into an inappropriate category).

Q In any of the categories, you're allowed to enter up to 5 items, as long as they're a combined 5,000 words or less, correct?
A NO. You can enter as many pieces as you'd like in any of the categories. The 5,000 word limit applies to each individual entry. The 5-piece limit applies to entries that are series or multi-part reports.

For example, let's say a newspaper ran a 10-piece series about the global economic crisis. The paper ran one installment every day or so until all 10 articles were published. Now the editors want to enter the series for our Gold Keyboard Award (investigative reporting). They would have to select the best 5 articles out of the 10 in the series (the "heart" of the material) and the combined word count for all 5 articles would have to come in at not much more than 5,000 words.

Q I'd like to enter 4 or 5 articles that are part of a series -- two of which are co-bylined with a colleague who lives on the West Coast. Is it allowable to enter articles that are co-bylined as long as the New York reporter/writer has the lead byline and did most of the work?
A YES. We often receive entries that are reported by teams. Sometimes very large teams whose members are situated around the world. If just one of the team members works or resides in the New York area, or the publisher operates here, the entry qualifies for submission. When team entries win, each contributor is considered to be a winner of the award. It's up to the team to designate who is the lead but that is not an award requirement. (Only one plaque is presented, though extra plaques can be ordered).

Q Can I enter multiple categories as long as I'm not entering the same material in each category?
A YES. You can enter as many pieces as you like so long as each individual piece is entered in only one category.
